UK Visa for UAE Residents: Standard Visitor Visa & ETA

For UAE residents travelling to the UK, the first question is which route applies to you: a full Standard Visitor visa, or the newer Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This depends on your nationality, not your UAE residency. This guide explains both, based on how the process commonly works for applicants in the UAE. Always verify current rules on GOV.UK before applying.

Before you apply: This is general information for planning, not legal or immigration advice, and it is not affiliated with any embassy or with VFS Global. Visa rules, fees and processing times change and depend on your nationality. Always confirm the current requirements with the official authority before you apply or book. Last reviewed 2026-09.

Visa or ETA: which applies to you

It depends on your passport. Nationals of a set of visa-exempt countries (including the US, Canada, Australia and most of Europe) generally need only an ETA, applied for online. The majority of South Asian, Arab and African passport holders resident in the UAE need a full Standard Visitor visa with biometrics. Your UAE residence visa does not change which category you fall into; it only lets you apply from the UAE.

Where and how you apply

The Standard Visitor visa application is completed online via GOV.UK, after which you give biometrics at a VFS Global centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Optional priority and super-priority services can speed up the decision where available.

Documents commonly required

A valid passport, your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, bank statements, an employment or NOC letter (and trade licence if self-employed), a cover letter setting out your trip, and evidence of accommodation and travel plans. The application asks you to show genuine visit intent, sufficient funds and strong ties to the UAE.

Processing time

Standard visitor, study and work visa decisions commonly take around three weeks, with paid priority options faster where available. Settlement and family routes take much longer. Confirm current timelines on GOV.UK.

The flight booking point

You are generally advised to show your travel plans, but as with Schengen, do not buy non-refundable flights before your visa or ETA is confirmed. Use a refundable reservation for the application and book real flights once approved. Compare refundable fares to London and other UK cities in the search below.

Compare Refundable Flights for Your Application

Search flights from the UAE for your dates. For a visa application, use a refundable or held booking and only buy your real ticket once the visa is approved.

Where do UAE residents apply for a UK visa?

The application is completed online on GOV.UK, with biometrics given at a VFS Global centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Priority services are available in some cases.
