Your nationality decides, your residency does not
This is the single most misunderstood point. Visa requirements are set by the destination country based on your passport. Holding a UAE residence visa does not give you special entry rights to Europe, the UK, the US or most countries. What your UAE residency does do is let you apply from the UAE, usually through a local application centre, rather than from your home country.
The main ways you apply
Depending on the destination, you will use one of a few channels. Many countries outsource applications to VFS Global, which runs visa application centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah for 40+ countries including most of Europe, the UK, Canada and Australia. Some countries use other centres such as TLS Contact (used by France and Spain for Schengen) or BLS. A few, like the United States, take applications directly at their consulate. Others offer an e-visa applied for entirely online, or a visa on arrival, or visa-free entry.
What VFS Global is, and is not
VFS Global is an outsourcing company that collects applications, biometrics and documents and passes them to the embassy or consulate. It does not decide your visa. The decision is always made by the destination country's authorities. VFS charges its own service fee on top of the visa fee, typically in the range of AED 130 to 300 depending on the country.
Visa-free and visa-on-arrival options
For UAE residents of many nationalities, several destinations are visa-free or offer a visa on arrival or a quick e-visa, particularly in the Caucasus, Central Asia and parts of Southeast Asia.
